I am a priest's child, Lacan would say. Trained by the brothers of the Order of Mary, he was a devout child and gained a significant, internal knowledge of the trials and tricks of Christian spirituality.

He also knew how to speak wonderfully to Catholics and familiarize them with psychoanalysis. The Jesuit Order was betting on his School. Freud, drawing his optimism from the Enlightenment, believed that religion was nothing but an illusion that the progress of scientific spirit would eventually dissolve.

Lacan did not believe that at all. On the contrary, he believed that true religion, Roman Catholicism, would ultimately deceive everyone by peddling meaning with a ladle in the real that science would make increasingly persistent, more unbearable.
