Sita Doulip has just missed her flight. Instead of sitting awkwardly listening to the incomprehensible announcements of the airport's loudspeakers, she discovers a method that allows her to defy the queues at the counters, the bland meals, the crying children, and the voices of the parents, the uncomfortable, bolted-to-the-floor plastic chairs: instead of changing flights, she changes dimensions.
There, Sita encounters societies completely different from Earthly ones. As her method, which now bears her name, spreads, Sita and her travel companions will experience cultures where people, upon reaching adulthood, plunge into silence, where anger and rage are the foundations of every personality, and where there are cities solely dedicated to frenzied consumption.
These reports, presented with a satirical and reflective mood by Le Guern, constitute a modern version of Gulliver's Travels and reveal unpleasant truths about our own human society.
With her familiar, penetrating, and playful writing style, Le Guern addresses the themes that have long preoccupied her: feminism, tyranny, mortality and immortality, ultimately the meaning – and mystery – of human existence. In 2004, she was awarded the Locus Award for Best Collection.
