Cardiology Paper and Electrocardiogram
The electrocardiogram (ECG) is the recording of the small electric currents produced by our heart that reach the surface of the body. A specialized device, the electrocardiograph, records these currents through electrodes placed at specific points and prints them on paper.
The electrocardiogram captures the electrical activity of the heart during the recording. It is important to perform this when new symptoms appear, such as: fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, swollen legs, tachycardia, or bradycardia.
Preventive Electrocardiogram
- Men over 40 years old or women over 50, who have no health issues, are advised to have an electrocardiogram every 3 to 5 years.
- If there are additional risk factors such as smoking or diabetes, it is advisable to have a cardiac check-up every two years.
- If there is a family history of heart attack or stroke before the age of 60, the check-up should be done at an age 5 years younger than the age of the relative.
