Description & Specifications

Cuba, 1977. Ivan struggles to make a living and whenever he gets the chance, he wanders to his favorite beach, outside Havana. There he meets a strange man who tells him a story: the story of Ramón Mercader, the assassin of Trotsky, from the time when, as a young communist, he fought in the Spanish Civil War until the time he emerges from the prisons of Mexico and takes refuge in Moscow.

But how is it possible for one person to know things that only someone who was present at the events could know? Triggered by a true event, Leonardo Padura builds a story in which the lives of three people intersect: Trotsky, from the moment he goes into exile until he is assassinated in Coyoacán, Mexico; Ramón Mercader, trained by the Soviet secret services to assassinate Trotsky; and the young Cuban Ivan, who will become the guardian of this secret and dangerous story.

Above all, however, the book is a question filled with sorrow for the great utopia of the 20th century -the utopia of a more just society- which was distorted and lost.
