October 27, 1940: Peter will remember this day because his cricket died. He will remember it because the next day he hears his mother's voice telling him: "Get up… there’s a war. Can’t you hear the sirens?"
When the war reached the doorstep of Greece, Peter was nine years old, had a turtle as a pet, passionately loved American movies, and knew about the war only through his books. However, he is now experiencing it every day, along with his parents, his grandfather, and his older sister, Antigone, beginning a long walk, a stroll through occupied Athens during those difficult years of hunger, rations, fear, and persecutions, with hope flickering deep down.
Guided by his beloved heroes from Greek history and with adolescence knocking at the door, Peter, with his sister and their friends, does not hesitate to participate in the Resistance, sabotaging German vehicles, writing slogans "WE ARE HUNGRY! GIVE US FOOD" on the walls, and always having as their motto a song that ignites their hearts: Always ahead of us, for a new life…
WRITTEN BY THE PRESS Read The Great Walk of Peter by Alki Zei for many reasons, but even just to admire the courage and resourcefulness of Peter, this young resistance fighter who made life difficult for the Italian and German occupiers.
