Description

Once we understand the centrality of social reproduction in capitalist society, we can no longer view class in the usual way. Contrary to traditional views, what constitutes class in capitalist society is not only the relationships that directly exploit "labor," but also the relationships that produce and renew it.

Nor does the global working class consist exclusively of those who work for wages in factories or mines. Equally important are those who work in fields and private households; in offices, hotels, and restaurants; in hospitals, daycare centers, and schools; precariously employed in the public sector and civil society; the unemployed and those who receive no compensation in return for their work.

The global working class is far from being limited to white straight men, as many still imagine; the majority comprises migrants, racialized people, women—both cis and trans—and people with different abilities, whose needs and desires are negated or distorted by capitalism. This lens also expands the way we see class struggle.

The critical point for us, and the key to understanding the present, is that class struggle includes the struggles for social reproduction.

What will 21st-century feminism look like? The new wave of militant feminism that is erupting in every corner of the globe answers this question by demanding the overthrow of gender oppression through the struggle to dismantle capitalism—the system that intertwines class exploitation with gender violence, racism and colonial violence, war and imperialism, and environmental destruction.

It is a feminism that is directly antagonistic to liberal feminism, which envisions equal opportunities within domination and management of exploitation, attempting to depoliticize the struggles for gender justice and placing feminism in the service of capital.

Feminism for the 99% indeed constitutes a manifesto, proclaiming the principles and strategic goals of a feminism that is discourse and action from and for the social majority; it represents a Marxist manifesto that picks up the thread of searching for a revolutionary rupture by re-signifying class struggle in light of contradictions surrounding issues that have been silenced for years, such as gender, sexuality, disability, and ecology.
