Description

This is what it means to be a human, I tell you: Freedom! The Life and Times of Alexis Zorba is a story about spirit and flesh. It was first published in Greece in 1946 and is based on the life of Georgis Zorbas, a friend and business associate of the author.

In this book, the full of contrasts soul of Kazantzakis takes shape in prose, as his contemplative disposition is revealed once again. With a significant differentiation, however: Kazantzakis manages to give his reflection a light-hearted tone, transforming it into free, uninterrupted narration.

More specifically, the full of contradictions, as mentioned, soul of his, which directs his worldview, revolves mainly around the author's primary concern: the struggle between man's will for freedom and ultimately the adversities he faces.

This call to Action is embodied by Zorba, who as a model carries this Action into eternity. At the end of the day, however, the author returns to his truth, which is summed up in Zorba's phrase: "You could have, poor thing, once in your life seen a beautiful green stone and you didn't see it."

In my life, my greatest benefactors have been travel and dreams; very few people, both living and dead, have helped my struggle. However, if I wanted to distinguish which people left the deepest imprints on my soul, I might highlight three or four: Homer, Bergson, Nietzsche, and Zorba.

The new editions, with new covers and specially designed fonts, are accompanied by introductory texts and a postscript, offering more details about the work itself and the era in which it was written.
