Description

The Garmin inReach Messenger is an extremely small, durable, and lightweight satellite communication device. It is primarily designed for hikers, climbers, and travelers who go off the mobile network, offering two-way messaging, location sharing, and SOS functionality via the global Iridium satellite network.

Main Features & Benefits

  • Smart network management: Through the Garmin Messenger App, the device sends messages via Wi-Fi or mobile network when available. Once the signal is lost, it automatically and seamlessly switches to satellite, saving your data plan.
  • Top battery life: Provides up to 28 days of operation with signal updates every 10 minutes, twice as long as the inReach Mini 2.
  • Two-way SOS: In case of emergency, the dedicated SOS button connects you directly to Garmin Response, a 24-hour international rescue coordination center.
  • Durable construction: Certified IPX7 waterproof and resistant to drops and extreme temperatures.
  • Safety Charge feature: Can function as an emergency power bank, providing a small charge to your smartphone if its battery runs out.

Limitations You Should Know

  • No map navigation: Unlike the inReach Mini series or Garmin handheld GPS devices, the Messenger focuses solely on communication. It only has the basic TracBack feature to return to your starting point.
  • Small screen: The built-in 1.1-inch digital display mainly confirms message sending/receiving and basic settings. For easy message typing, using a smartphone is almost essential.
  • Subscription required: Like all inReach devices, to operate satellite messaging and SOS functions, an active monthly or annual Iridium satellite data plan is necessary.
