Description & Specifications

Philosophy of language, logic, mathematics, social sciences, anthropology... Semantics is the unique branch of linguistics that uses methods, considerations, and tools from all these fields of human knowledge to study the meaning of linguistic expressions.

Together with phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics, it represents a distinct level of analysis in linguistic theory and studies human language in a dynamic way, moving from the meaning of the word to the meaning of the phrase and the sentence.

Languages have many different ways to express the same concept. For example, the words σπίτι (house) and οικία (home) in Greek are synonymous. Moreover, the word cheval (horse) in French has the same meaning as the word άλογο (horse) in Greek, while the noun phrase le tableau rouge (the red table) in French corresponds to the noun phrase ο κόκκινος πίνακας (the red table) in Greek, which has a different structure.

How can we relate the meanings of different linguistic expressions that differ in form but have similar meanings across the world's languages? How can language serve as both the object and the medium of study? Regardless of the language being studied, semantics offers us metalanguages - tools for investigating meaning in any language we study.

This work is the first Greek-language manual dedicated to the field of semantics, with application examples from the French and Greek languages. The volume aims to introduce the reader to the principles, methods, and research tools of semantic theory.

Initially, it presents the key working terms in semantics. It then moves on to the individual levels of the semantics field (lexical semantics, propositional and categorical logic) and presents the conditions under which they emerge. Subsequently, it attempts a concise overview of the most important approaches, such as second-order logic, type theory, and intensional semantics, as well as the relationship between meaning and context.
