Magas, a cute fox terrier, lives in the house of a wealthy family in Alexandria. A series of mischiefs causes him to leave his home out of fear. Thus, he finds himself for a few days in the poor neighborhoods of the city, where he encounters the hardships of life and meets the stray dog Afratos.

Their friendship will give rise to unprecedented feelings and thoughts in the well-brought-up Magas, providing him with life lessons that will lead him to maturity. Drawing elements from her childhood memories, the author presents through Magas's eyes life in the thriving Greek community of Alexandria in the early 20th century, while also making references to the Macedonian Struggle, the revolution of 1821, and the defeat of 1897.
