"I'm sorry for your loss, my son," says a stranger, interrupting the flow of my thoughts. "My son?" I reply, my voice dripping with venom, making him feel a bit uncomfortable. The man awkwardly tries to fix his tie. "Uh, it's just a manner of speaking." "Forgive my brother. He doesn't know how to handle his grief." Cal puts his hand on my shoulder and squeezes lightly. I can smell the vodka and mint on his breath—I glare at him. My middle brother may be dressed to the nines in his immaculate suit and perfectly styled blond hair, but his bloodshot eyes tell a different story. The man mutters a few more words, and without bothering to listen, I head for the nearest exit. "I don't know how to handle my grief?" Even though I don't like the idea that my grandfather died, the only thing I can't handle today is the heartburn that's bothering me. "Relax a little. That's the kind of thing people say at funerals." Cal looks at me and frowns.
