In Notes to the Italians, Lacan suggests to the so-called Italian tripod, his Italian group, to appoint as members those who apply for admission based on the principle of passage. He proposes to them the trial that may lead to the verification that there is an analyst. There is an analyst only if a certain desire of theirs has emerged. This is the condition through which, in some aspects of their adventures, the analyst must bear the mark. The desire of the analyst is a desire for knowledge. Lacan contrasts with humanity, which is defined by happiness, the analyst who desires knowledge at the cost of being the outcast of humanity, as it does not desire this knowledge. Jacques-Alain Miller, in his lesson The Symposium of Analysts, one of the traditions of which we translated in this volume, showed us that the historical model of this unprecedented desire of the psychoanalyst is neither the desire for scientific knowledge for Lacan nor the desire of a certain humanism that does not want to know. It is about the interaction of the two.
