This book attempts to analyze the images of Theofilos and addresses issues of his painting direction. These issues primarily concern the theatrical manner in which he composes the setting of his painted scenes, so that the natural environment is depicted and the architectural elements are distributed.
They also relate to the theatricality of his subjects, through their costumes and their placement in the visual space. This ability of Theofilos to depict real situations or his visions in a theatrical way can be traced both in the events of his images and in the space that he decorates with them, arranging them in a continuity of his own invention.
As spectators, we are invited to participate in a performance, whose personae dramatis are the painter and his work.
