Description

The Manifesto of Individualism is an excellent introduction to the work of Han Ryner (1861-1938), a French anarchist thinker and writer who is still unknown to the Greek reading public.

Brief and concise, written in the form of an internal dialogue, it crystallizes the essence of his thought, condensing his positions on society, politics, and human relationships in a compact manner.

Page by page, we see a unique form of anarchism emerging in this dense book, based on Epictetus and Epicurus, as well as Socrates and Christ—Ryner creates a remarkable mosaic, captivating and innovative, a confession that is purely personal, a true manifesto that serves as an example of freedom of thought.

Influenced by Stoicism and Epicurus as well as by Max Stirner ("father" of anarchist individualism) and Leo Tolstoy (anarcho-Christianity), Han Reiner was one of the main exponents of anarcho-individualism or anarchist individualism. For Reiner, individualism is "the moral doctrine that, based on no doctrine, no tradition, no external determination, addresses only the individual conscience." He names Jesus, Socrates, Epicurus, and Epictetus as role models for individualists.
Anarchist individualism is the component of anarchism that focuses on the freedom of the individual and self-realization. Given that we are talking about something completely personal regarding the rejection of any form of authority and non-violence, besides Stirner and Tolstoy, anarchist individualists, among others, can be considered Proudhon, Oscar Wilde, and in his own way, Nietzsche.
