The pencil case features silk dyed with beni and saffron, and is gold-plated. Its design has roots in the Edo period (1615–1868), when it was used as a costume for the theatrical style known as Noh. The term Karaori specifically refers to the highly embroidered traditional women's kimono that was known in Noh theater.
