Description

This book examines Greek-German relations during the post-war period and tells a largely forgotten story: how a country that suffered from German occupation turned, from the early post-war years, towards West Germany and how the latter, against the odds, became the guarantor of Greece's accession to the European Community.

The book raises questions regarding the broader European context of the bilateral relations between Greece and Germany, and thus aims to contribute to the deconstruction of the blame game that was set in motion in both countries during the recent crisis.

Although bilateral relations are at the center of the study, it does not follow the stream of diplomatic history and consciously avoids exhaustive reproduction of the official positions of both sides; nor does it subscribe to the excessive emphasis that political scientists place on European institutions. These parameters are, of course, taken into account, outlining the broader context of our history.

What distinguishes the book, however, is the examination of Greek-German relations and their European contexts through the perspective of business history, entrepreneurs, and business organizations; a perspective that brings to the fore the way in which wider economic and social forces impact the political pressures exerted at the level of interstate relations and European integration.
