Description

The period from the assassination of Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias (1831) to the arrival of King Otto in Greece (1833) is traditionally considered a period of "anarchy," which remains somewhat unknown to this day.

During this time, however, the crucial imposition of an authoritarian monarchical regime was decided, while legality was claimed politically by the Government and the Constitutionalists.

What factors undermined the choice of the Greeks for a Constitutional Monarchy? Why was the distribution of national land and a subsequent development of the Greek economy not allowed? What was the role of Greeks and foreigners in the country’s slide towards the authoritarian regime of the Bavarians?

By exhaustively analyzing the period 1831-1833, the author attempts to answer these, as well as other questions, utilizing newer archival documents and approaching the core of the events.

In this way, he successfully reconstructs the historical context of an era, vividly presenting the political morals and practices that were to leave a strong imprint on the public life of modern Greece.
