More than a century after its first official presentation to the Athenian public, the poetry of Cavafy continues to invite critics and readers to rediscover it and promises the adventure of yet another reading.
Its ability to accommodate different reading needs and interpretive practices is undoubtedly one of its greatest virtues and simultaneously one of the main reasons for its ongoing appeal in Greece and abroad.
But what is it about Cavafy's poetry that allows different readers to project diverse experiences onto it, and what are the key elements of Cavafy's writing that continually open it to the future?
Based on the reading of specific poems, this book seeks to illuminate the hide-and-seek that Cavafy plays with the reader and to identify the main ways in which he manages to keep the meaning relevant to different approaches, expectations, and reading conventions.
