The book The Art of War by Sun Tzu discusses the work The Art of War of the great Chinese strategist Sun Tzu. This book complements the treatise Martial Art: The Art of War throughout History, which presented the evolution of martial arts from antiquity as a concise work.

In this treatise, which can be studied and understood independently, the work of the Chinese strategist is presented and analyzed with reference to the work itself, rather than the theories that were developed as a result of it. Sun Tzu's Art of War, translated into Greek from the 1910 English edition by Lionel Giles, gives the impression to the uninformed reader that it is a collection of military aphorisms or war proverbs.

However, through deep study of it, facilitated by the accompanying book, the aspiring leader understands that it is a philosophical work that helps him learn martial arts in an abstract way. Mastery is achieved through the internalization, assimilation, and appropriation of martial principles and teachings that are taught in a straightforward manner and show the aspiring political and military leader the direction moving forward.

This direction is delineated by virtue, knowledge, wisdom, rationality, moderation, and the unity of friendly power, which is commanded to win with minimal use of force. Such a victory can only be achieved through deception, maneuvering, or diverting the enemy in space, in order to dramatically alter the power dynamics of the adversaries in favor of the friendly force before the decisive engagement.

The work of Sun Tzu holds particular value for our country, as the teachings of the great Chinese strategist remind every younger Greek of what our ancestors always practiced. They remind him that he can gain his freedom only when there is harmony and unity, and that all actions, both political and military, are based on deception and the tricks of diversion and division of hostile power.

In this path moved Odysseus, Miltiades, Themistocles, Belisarius, Kolokotronis, Belisarius with Iatrides, and so many other known and unknown Greeks, each from his own position, prioritizing courage, cunning, and indirect maneuvering as the best strategies for fulfilling the goals of a small and unsupported nation.
