Description

Description

Saint Symeon the New Theologian is undoubtedly considered the most important mystical Theologian of Byzantium, whose teachings and writings laid the foundation for the development of Hesychastic Theology. Together with his student Niketas Stethatos, they represent the main figures of a dynamic renewal of theological thought and practice and a revitalization of the spiritual life of Byzantium in the 10th – 11th centuries. Driven more than anyone else by the desire to perceive, see, and reach the mystical experience, he is regarded as the most original theologian of Byzantium.

In this volume, the publisher "Zitros" presents, 1,000 years after the saint's repose (1022 AD), the Letters of Saint Symeon, with a detailed and informative introduction, a translation into modern Greek for the first time, and rich commentary based on all relevant literature. Through the Letters of Saint Symeon, important aspects of his theological teaching are outlined, including his education, which reveals a deep knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and Ecclesiastical Literature, as well as the established beliefs of his opponents.

The words of Saint Symeon are straightforward, unadulterated, and genuine, combining elements of poetic philosopher and saint. Through this volume, readers have the opportunity to learn about the ascetic mystical theology of Byzantium, the life, teachings, and magnificent literary work of Saint Symeon.

The book is also useful for students, theologians, and philologists, as it provides material for further research. The introduction, translation, and commentary were written by philologist and Byzantinist Petros K. Vlachakos, while the book is prefaced by Professor Ioannis Kourabeles of the Theological School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
