Description & Specifications

Two strangers threaten Parashchos with a knife and a gun. They have kidnapped his daughter and demand that his son free the komitadji Asan Tano. In parallel, grandfather Antipas lives with the memory of the enigmatic Roxani.

The pursuit of happiness, the little that fills a life, the transformation of a city, the dreams and illusions of three generations, which proceed as shaped by the steps of women – wives, lovers, mothers, daughters, sisters... And all against the backdrop of the Babylon of tribes and languages and the generally shocking history of Thessaloniki from the late 19th century to the first two decades of the 20th, with memories completing a cycle of ninety-nine years.

The heroes mingle with bullies, adventurers, and close friends, while in the foreground gangs, dance parties, coffee houses, brothels, whores, spies, bombing attacks, fires... alternate.

Sometimes they see the stars twinkling, sometimes they tremble on the cobblestones of life, and sometimes they burn in the furnace of revenge, betrayal, morals, loss, hatred, nationalism, money, and in the wild dance of love.

Read an excerpt

"Instead of teasing me, wouldn't it be better if we became friends? You seem like a smart kid..."

"What are you saying, you fool?" Tasmas interrupted him. "Do you take me for a priest's kid, you sickly one!" And he started slapping and kicking him with even more fury. "Take a different path to avoid him," his father gave him a second piece of advice. That was Antipas. Good-natured, gentle, tolerant, as if the world resembled the two almond trees in his yard that he cared for with great attention. Watering them, digging around them, fertilizing them with manure, pruning them, spreading lime on their trunks, and harvesting their fruit around the end of August. In the same way, he behaved at his job as a carter and sometimes as a wagon driver. He had a cart which, depending on the occasion, he would convert into a carriage, as he learned after working for Nikolakis Efendi. Whenever there was a fare, he would fit double facing seats and a canopy on iron rails on the cart and serve the customers.
