Pirandello undertook a desperate endeavor to attract modern Italian theater away from the stagnation of classical and bourgeois drama and to open a new horizon far removed from anything traditional, established, and familiar.
His endeavor succeeded, indeed, in the best possible way, as one only needs to consider the impact his work has had – and we are of course talking about his novellas, theater, and poetry, as well as his theoretical studies – on modern art in general.
Many of his scholars claim that he saved contemporary, domestic theater from destruction.
