“What is wrong with Yiannis?” “Why doesn’t he talk?” “Can he hear me when I talk to him?” “Is he like this because he was born this way?” It is not easy to explain to children the behavior of an autistic individual. However, by observing Yiannis, a young boy with autism, in various phases of his daily life (waking up in the morning, at school, on the street, at the playground, at the restaurant...), we can talk to them about diversity, the challenges, and the abilities of people on the autism spectrum. Let us introduce children to the values of acceptance, inclusion, and mutual respect, helping them live in a society where diversity is not a weakness. It includes additional material for parents and educators regarding the behavior of individuals on the autism spectrum and their social acceptance. Yiannis is 4 years old and is autistic. Autism is not a disease. If you see an autistic child with your friends, explain to them why he behaves differently. Do not judge him, nor make fun of him. Because now you know “what is wrong with Yiannis”! Excerpt from the book Suitable for classroom discussion as part of the Skills Workshops theme I Care and I Act – Inclusion: Mutual Respect, Diversity.
