Without being Nesbo's strongest with Harry Hole, it keeps your interest and successfully transports you to exotic Australia!

It is the first book I read, and having also attended a speech about Nesbo, I recommend it, it has a very nice and fast-paced plot, it doesn't tire you at all! And it is also the first appearance of Harry Hole!!!!!!!!!

Easy to read without having anything to remember. Perhaps the weakest point is the protagonist, the bile

Description & Specifications

55 MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE

Inspector Harry Hole is seconded from the Oslo Crime Squad to Sydney to observe the investigation being conducted by the local authorities into a murder case. Harry can offer his assistance but has explicit instructions not to get involved. The victim is a twenty-three-year-old Norwegian who is famous in her homeland. Naturally, Harry cannot remain a simple observer and forms a friendship with the inspector leading the investigation as well as with one of the witnesses, resulting in his entanglement in the inquiry.

These three individuals will discover that the murder of the girl is just the latest link in a chain of unsolved murders. They then have to face a psychopath who is active across Australia. As the noose begins to tighten around the perpetrator, Harry fears that no one is safe anymore – not even those investigating the case.

AWARDS

Riverton Prize 1997: Best Norwegian Crime Novel of the Year

Glass Key (Glasnyckeln) 1998: Best Scandinavian Crime Novel of the Year

WHAT THE PRESS SAYS

A tourist in Australia, Harry Hole dissects the social and cultural reality and unveils his explosive temperament. (Kirkus Reviews)

Thrilling! An amazing opening to the series. (Sunday Times)

A gripping crime story with elements from Aboriginal mythology. A stunning debut that received the highest honor in Scandinavia (The Glass Key). The pages turn like water thanks to the vibrant characters, vivid descriptions, historical references, and realistic dialogues. (Berlingske Tidende)

It is truly unique to watch a younger and more talkative Harry. Nesbo is an exceptional writer who knows how to build a story. He leads his readers at the speed of a freight train to a resolution that no one could imagine. (Scottish Express)

Harry Hole's first adventure rightfully occupies a place on the shelf with the other books in the series. (The Daily Express)

From this first book in the Harry Hole series, Nesbo sets out to dismantle all the clichés of the genre, establishing new patterns, and proves to be a visionary writer. (The Independent)

A must-have for Harry Hole enthusiasts… Knowing the evolution of the hero in the subsequent books of the series, this first adventure takes on a tone of tragic irony that heightens the tension and power of the plot. (Booklist)

Read an excerpt

With an aching back and the first signs of jet lag beginning to appear, Harry suddenly found himself alone—just him and his suitcase—on a sidewalk in a city with a population roughly equal to that of all of Norway, outside the luxurious Crescent Hotel. Next to his name were three stars. The chief of police in Oslo was not known for his generosity when it came to the accommodation of his employees during business trips. However, this didn’t seem all that bad. They probably have some kind of discount for public servants and this must be the smallest room in the hotel, Harry thought.
