The translation by Stratis Paschalis of Shakespeare's work "Love's Labour's Lost" constitutes, as he himself says, "the most essential apprenticeship and training in the dramatic decoding of a classic text and its transfer into another language, based on orality and substantial poetry, rather than erudition and literary scholarship."
At the same time, it is the translation upon which the famous performance by Stathis Livathinos was based, with the actors of the Experimental Stage of the National Theatre, during the period of 2002-2003. This strange comic drama by Shakespeare captures the ephemeral, deceptive, yet so enchanting game of love. Throughout the work, seductive words, melodies, and the antics of adolescents dominate.
Dreamy, innocent, Don Quixote-like heroes. All around, the deep forests. And continuously, the chase, the dance, the crisp laughter, the melancholy of unfulfilled desire, magical fairy tales, love letters, and above all, the theater – this need to risk life by wearing masks and costumes, ready to forsake everything for the sake of love, desire, and the chimera.
Without exaggerations and extremes, Stratis Paschalis conveyed to our language this captivating complexity, the tragicomedy, from which loneliness emerges, the illusion is revealed, and life itself always shows the naked truth.
