Description

1932: the well-known novel by Aldous Huxley "Brave New World" is published, a book that prophesied a nightmarish human future under the totalitarian control of every human behavior and thought.

2010: The combative German journalist Günter Wallraff proves in his new book that this world is already here. His arguments are drawn from the daily experience of workers - that which is hidden behind the glossy displays of the metropolises of capitalism.

As in the case of the Turkish Ali ("In the Margins") and the shackled Wallraff ("Fascism Next to Us"), here we also have Wallraff's personal testimonies, revealing the harsh truth as he experienced it: Wallraff disguises himself as a Somali immigrant in racist Germany, spends time in a homeless shelter investigating the fraud of the so-called welfare state, works for minimum wage in a factory that produces rolls for Lidl and in call center management companies.

Subsequently, he conducts research with underpaid workers at Starbucks and in Germany's most renowned gourmet restaurant. Finally, he uncovers the downfall of the state-owned railway company, aimed at its privatization.

With shocking details, Wallraff reveals here the labor medievalism that allows Germany to present itself today as a paradise of capitalism. Wallraff is one of the most widely read, committed writer-journalists in the world. His book "In the Margins" has been translated into thirty-eight languages and sold five million copies.
