We know very little about the history of Turkish cinema, and for the same reason, we are unaware that some Greeks contributed, as early as 1896, to its birth and development. Traveling filmmakers, visionary theatrical entrepreneurs who believed in cinema despite the adverse conditions of the time (complete absence of electrical infrastructure, censorship, etc.), theater managers in the city, as well as daring pioneering creators marked the beginnings of cinema in Turkey until 1922.
During the interwar period, the first Greek professional filmmakers emerged, and from the early post-war years onwards, a plethora of talented technicians (cameramen, sound engineers, editors, etc.) appeared, who, in turn, contributed to the development of the seventh art - even though the cultural environment there did not allow for miracles.
The album "From Paris to Peran: Greek Filmmakers of the City" combines knowledge and method with a love for the City and for Cinema. It is based on unpublished documents that the authors meticulously and devotedly collected for a decade and a half despite the challenging subject. The rich illustrative material that accompanies it is a testament to this dedication.
The album "From Paris to Peran: Greek Filmmakers of the City" offers a different perspective on Istanbul, one that belongs to Greek intellectuals. Furthermore, it provides a unique view of Greek, Turkish, and Balkan cinema - which is why it constitutes a valuable contribution to a bibliography that is absolutely incomplete on the subject.
This album is the result of the passion of two creative individuals from the City: filmmaker and screenwriter George Bozi and the renowned author (Politiki Kouzina) Soula Bozi.
