Description & Specifications

August Strindberg likely uses the life of the Philipps couple as a canvas for his work. His sister Anna had married Professor Hugo Philipps, and Strindberg maintains very close relationships with both until 1900, when he quarrels with them, probably because Hugo Philipps supports some writers whom Strindberg detests.

In October 1900, the Philipps celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary (a detail that dominates the First Part of `The Dance of Death`), and Strindberg refuses to attend the celebration. In the play, Alice is an actress who abandons her art to marry Edgar, just as Anna stops performing as a musician after her marriage to Philipps.

In the First Part of the play, the two spouses are depicted as cannibalistic monsters, whose only pleasure is to humiliate their partner. However, in the Second Part, which Strindberg writes a little later, there is a ray of optimism: the two young lovers may live a better life. The same happens in reality: the son of the Philipps, Henry, marries Strindberg's daughter, Greta, in 1907.
