The text, an excellent psychological portrait, traps the reader with its fast-paced and unexpected plot, lively dialogues, conflicts, and contradictions within the characters' inner worlds, while it does not provide realistic descriptions or clear explanations, thus distancing itself from contemporary novels.

As Unamuno wrote in a letter to his friend Joan Maragall in 1902, it's the story of (...) a young woman who, rejecting suitors, remains unmarried to raise her niece and nephew, children of her dying sister. She stays with her brother-in-law, whom she rejects as a husband, because she does not want to taint the environment of innocence in which her children breathe with marital duties. (...)
