The impetus for writing this book was the need to meet the teaching requirements of the subjects of Biometeorology and Bioclimatology, which are included in the curricula of the Agricultural University of Athens and other Higher Educational Institutions in the country.
It can also be used by students of Polytechnic Schools and by professional engineers who are interested in the rational design of public open spaces, so that they operate in a way that improves the atmospheric environment of the city.
The analysis of the subjects included in the book was done in such a way that the text is easily readable and understandable by students as well as by any reader.
To ensure the necessary pedagogical coherence, the content of the book was divided into six chapters. The first chapters describe the factors that affect and influence the formation of biometeorological-bioclimatic conditions.
The impacts of the thermal environment (stress) on the activity, productivity, and hygiene of living organisms are examined, and representative indicators are analyzed with selected applications in the thermal sensation of humans.
The last chapters analyze the bioclimatic behavior of buildings, with particular emphasis on the conditions that are formed in public open spaces (squares, parks, groves).
This analysis reveals the design problems of these spaces, which lead to the degradation of their bioclimatic behavior and consequently their negative impact on the urban environment.
Alongside the highlighting of these problems, appropriate suggestions for improving the environmental conditions of public open spaces emerge.
