Description

From one of the most famous poets in history comes a new collection of writings that offers solace to friends and acquaintances experiencing loss, providing words that soothe the soul.

Throughout his life, poet Rainer Maria Rilke reached out with letters to those close to him, to those who contacted him after reading his works or whom he had met a few times—anyone with whom he felt an inner connection. In his extensive correspondence, there are about two dozen condolence letters. These direct, personal, and practical letters explore loss and mortality, taking on the role of a sensitive, serious, and uplifting guide through life's difficulties.

He comforts a friend for the loss of her nephew, which she felt as the loss of her own child; a mentor for the death of her dog; and an acquaintance struggling with the end of a friendship. The result is a deep insight into mourning and a reflection on the role of pain in our lives, as well as a reassuring guide on how to manage it.

When things become truly difficult and tormenting, we find ourselves in a place that is already very close to its transformation...
