Description

Gender equality cannot be achieved without racial equality. We need the Shared Sisterhood. Biases persist in organizations and society. Despite the efforts made in recent decades, equality in gender and race has not yet been achieved. Worse still, Black, Indigenous, Asian, and Latina women face greater obstacles compared to their White peers.

A change in the approach to equality is imperative. We must move from individual solutions to collective action, where people from historically dominant and marginalized groups work together so that all women can benefit from professional development and equality. Everyone, regardless of gender, can participate in the Shared Sisterhood.

Professor Tina Opie launched the Shared Sisterhood as a movement to promote gender equality and racism in organizations. Since then, she and Professor Beth A. Livingston have worked to spread the message to organizational leaders, with thousands of followers joining the cause. In this book, they explain how to use vulnerability, trust, empathy, and risk-taking to build the Shared Sisterhood and overcome three key parts of the process:

• Delve into our own assumptions about race, gender, and power
• Bridge the gap between women of different backgrounds through authentic relationships
• Propel all women forward within the organization and beyond

In a balanced mix of history, research, and real-life examples — including their own experiences — this book encourages everyone to participate in the Shared Sisterhood and promote equality for all.
