Description

Description

The G.Skill Flare X5 DDR5 is aimed at demanding computer users, such as gamers, professionals in video and image editing, designers, and those who require high performance from their computer.

This specific series of memory from G.Skill is specially designed to operate in AMD systems and offers ideal performance and stability.

DDR5

DDR5 is the fifth generation of RAM technology for computers. It replaces DDR4 and offers increased speeds and capacity.

It offers operating speeds from 3200MT/s to 12600MT/s, response time (CAS Latency) from CL 28 to CL 48, while its capacity has increased up to 64GB per memory unit.

For speed (MT/s) and capacity (GB), the larger size we choose, the better performance we will have in our system, while for response time (CL), we want the smallest size for the speed (MT/s) we have chosen.

The above characteristics should be compatible with the specifications of our motherboard.

The Flare X5 DDR5 provides speed at 6000MT/s, with CL30 and 16GB per memory unit.

Compatibility

DDR5 technology is compatible with specific motherboards and processors. Indicatively, DDR5 is compatible with Alder Lake, Raptor Lake, and the latest Intel processors, as well as AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors.

However, for compatibility with your motherboard, you need to ensure that your motherboard supports DDR5 technology from the manufacturer. Compatibility depends on the processor platform and the type of motherboard you are using.

XMP & EXPO

XMP & EXPO is a technology that allows us to increase the frequency and performance of our computer's memory without the need for manual adjustments. (XMP/EXPO) is easily activated from the BIOS, is available on certain RAM memories, and is supported by certain motherboards.

The Flare X5 DDR5 has (EXPO) profiles with performances:

  • Speed (EXPO): 6000 MT/s
  • CAS Latency (EXPO): 30-38-38-96
  • Voltage (EXPO): 1.35V

Cooling & Design

The aluminum construction material combined with the memory height of 33mm, which is an ideal size to fit large CPU coolers, helps to keep the memory and the entire computer at a fairly low temperature even during the most demanding operations.

I ended up choosing these specific RAM modules after a lot of research. When I bought them, at least, they were among the cheapest DDR5 with a speed of 6000 MT/s and CL30. Which is ideal for AMD processors. The EXPO profiles were enabled without any issue and have been running for months now without any stability problems. These particular RAM modules are among the few that come with SK Hynix A-Die. They were paired with an MSI Mag B650 Tomahawk motherboard and an AMD Ryzen 9 7900.

  • I put it inside an NZXT H5 Flow case with a 280mm AIO and the RAM fit exactly, so it works as a low profile as advertised. Also quite value for money for its MHz and timings

  • Combined with the motherboard x870 pro rs wifi and a ryzen 5 7600 cpu. As I wrote in the mb review: No problem / freezing / or very slow boot. Checked QVL on the motherboard's site as well as on the ram's site before purchase. On the first boot, it only did memory training (orange led) for 1-2 minutes and then all the other leds flashed in sequence 2-3 times. On a normal cold boot, it does memory training for 4-5 seconds and a total of 20 seconds to reach the desktop. With the EXPO profile enabled in the bios, the memory training increased to 9-10 seconds and a total of 25 seconds to reach the desktop from the moment you press the button. All OK.

They were recognized and worked immediately with XMP enabled at a speed of 6000 MT/s. They are indeed CL30 so they hit the sweet spot. An extra positive is that they are low profile and won't cause space issues when installing a CPU cooler.
