“While political collectives operate within the society of Greek Cypriots, especially AKEL with its organizations and the right-wing unions, there is no mediation between Makarios and the community; at least none that would deprive him of his direct connection with it. Makarios 'speaks' directly to the community, and the community, responding to the calls of the Ethnarchate, 'speaks' directly to Makarios through mass events, offering him its unwavering support.

Makarios' dominance increasingly resembles the Bonapartist model. Through mass gatherings in stadiums and churches, through speeches, and essentially having the blank check support of the community and its political representatives, he directs it as he wishes. With the prestige of an indisputable political and ecclesiastical leader, with the radiance of his sacred vestments, and with his well-written speeches that he memorizes and delivers in his deeply charming voice, he imposes himself on the community.
