Description

An exciting study of the duels fought between the escort warships of the US Navy and Hitler's U-boats from December 1941 to May 1945.

Although the Battle of the Atlantic lasted for several years, its most critical phase began with the United States' entry into World War II. By December 1941, the British had dominated the U-boat threat in the Eastern Atlantic, only to see the front suddenly expand into areas that the US Navy would patrol, primarily in the Atlantic ocean area. Unless the US Navy could overcome the U-boat threat, the Allies would struggle to prevail.

The Battle of the Atlantic comprised thousands of individual duels: aircraft against U-boats, aircraft against aircraft, aircraft against ships - but most importantly, ships against U-boats. The individual battles between Germany's U-boats and the Allied warships escorting vital convoys often involved one-on-one engagements. These stories form the centerpiece of this detailed work. The technical details of the U-boats, cruisers, and destroyers involved are examined through impressive illustrations, including profiles of ships and submarines and weaponry artworks, while the critical encounters come to life through dramatic battle scenes. Among the encounters covered are USS Kearny vs. U-568, USS Roper (DD-147) vs U-85, USS Eugene E. Elmore (DE-686) vs U-549, and USS Atherton (DE-169) vs U-853.
