Description

Description

In this informative book, distinguished political thinker John Keane presents the complex history of democratic ideas and practices. He describes the early assembly democracies in the Middle East and Greece, continues with the election-based democracy inspired by Europe, and the birth of representative democracy, while reaching modern control democracy, highlighting the dangers of the dominance of new despotism.

A bold defense of the invaluable global ideal that makes us reflect: Democracy has a history, but does it have a future?

WHAT THE PRESS SAID

An exceptional read from a gifted author. Booklist

In a weary time when democracy seems to be under attack from all sides – especially from within – this small yet rich book serves as a tonic. Scott Ludlam, Australian politician and author

Provocative, passionate, entertaining, and even somewhat hopeful. Don't miss it. Michael Sudson, Professor of Journalism and Sociology, Columbia University

Read an excerpt

Democracy has a sauvage (wild) quality, as the French thinker Claude Lefort (1924-2010) liked to say. It shatters certainties, transcends boundaries, and does not easily submit. It asks people to see what lies behind the words of gods, divinely ordained rulers, and even human nature itself, to abandon any claim to inherent privilege based on the "natural" superiority of brain or blood, skin color, caste, class, religious belief, age, or sexual preference. Democracy alters power. By encouraging people to see that their lives can undergo change, democracy increases awareness of what is probably the greatest political problem: how to prevent the power of the few, the rich, or the powerful, who behave as if they are all-powerful immortals born to rule?
