"Following the Texts" is a portrait album of Whitman, as well as "Whitman on His Art," a collection of Whitman's statements about his role as a poet, drawn from his notebooks, letters, conversations, and newspaper articles.

Additionally, significant commentary from Whitman's contemporaries, such as Henry David Thoreau, Fanny Fern, Henry James, and Oscar Wilde, is included.

A completely new section of recent criticism features six essays by David S. Reynolds, Karen Sanchez-Eppler, John Irwin, Allen Grossman, Betsy Erkkila, and Michael Moon, reflecting the ongoing historical interpretation of Whitman's works as well as influential recent work in gender and sexuality studies.
