Description

The First Comprehension offers an early introduction to written comprehension, fostering children's enthusiasm for reading and their ability to interpret texts. In collaboration with an adult, young learners boost their confidence and learn to understand and evaluate each text.

The books are easy to annotate and provide a permanent record of each child's work, helping to track their progress. Designed to support the National Curriculum for Years 2 and 3, the content of this series is widely applicable and can be used by older children as well.

The First Comprehension Book 1 is aimed at children in Year 2 (ages 6 - 7) who are attempting written comprehension for the first time. Eighteen carefully selected texts reflect the variety of genres recommended by the National Curriculum, and the accompanying questions are presented in two parts, depending on the concentration level of most children in this age group.

It is the first of two activity books in the First Comprehension series, including works by authors such as Roald Dahl and A. A. Milne, as well as an excerpt from a children's dictionary and several accessible non-fiction texts. The series provides:

  • A concise introduction, making it easier for teachers, parents, and adult helpers to use the books effectively.
  • Excerpts from classic and contemporary fiction to broaden children's reading experiences.
  • A wide selection of poems, from William Wordsworth to Tony Mitton.
  • Stimulating non-fiction excerpts, covering various themes and structures.
  • A variety of question types, including direct, interpretive, and evaluative questions.

The separate Teacher's Guide contains teaching notes, sample answers, and additional activities for each text, allowing for the maximum use of First Comprehension.
