To enjoy my friend, I must respect him

Ideas/Values/Feelings of the book: Egoism-Arrogance | Friendship-Reconciliation | Right and wrong

The book: Three small plane trees were planted side by side by the villagers on the little island of the lake. Years passed, and the little trees grew up beloved like good friends. However, the time came when two of them began to wither. Someone was stealing their air and light. Who was it? The third plane tree, of course, which acted selfishly. At first, it boasted that it had become the king of the lake. But when it realized that it was left alone, without friends and company…

The series: In order to ensure that children have a healthy social life grounded in effective relationships, they must cultivate empathy, the ability to put themselves in others' shoes, to understand and feel things the same way another person experiences them. This need is addressed by the illustrated books of this series, which promote emotional intelligence. With the proposed approach for parents and educators, they attempt to guide children to see the world through the eyes of others, after first learning to recognize and manage their own emotions.

The author: Yoland Tsoroni-Georgiadi has a degree from the Law School, the Pedagogical Academy, and the Pedagogical Department of the University of Athens, and has been retrained at the Marasleio Teaching Institute. She worked for many years in public education, writes articles for educational magazines, is an active member of the Women’s Literary Society, and has published many books for children, novels for adults, and studies of folkloric content.

Review this product
  • Three plane trees grow like siblings on a small island... They are a beloved group of friends, until one of them starts to show a strange arrogant and selfish behavior! With its antics, it "kills" its friends and remains the only "king" of the island! Soon, however, it feels lonely, realizes its mistake, and asks for forgiveness...
I have also bought another book from the same series for my children, "So what?..." But I like "The Group on the Island" more... Maybe because I have lively twin boys and I want to teach them concepts such as love, friendship, empathy, cooperation, and mutual help. They must learn to live together peacefully and lovingly in the same house and share everything!
The three plane trees share the same island, the air, and the sun, elements that are critical for their survival. However, the one that naturally has a stronger character grows at the expense of its friends. The law of the strong! But at what cost...
In many books about the emotional maturity and socialization of children, I read how important frequent contact with their friends is.
Many times, though, I observe selfish and indifferent, even hostile behavior among them, but also towards others. I say again and again that these negative behaviors harm everyone. In the end, they will have no friends and will be alone. Of course, here I use the big guns... They won't be invited to children's parties and won't have gifts or cake... It works for a while, but after a bit, the same things start again...
So this book is a great ally in the proper intellectual and emotional education and development of my children!
It is a colorful, educational book with cheerful, playful sketches, which can easily be turned into a children's theatrical performance!
Three things stayed with us from this book:
    - The lack of empathy, cooperation, and sharing, and selfish behavior, ultimately bring loneliness!
    - However, recognizing every mistake, the tears of apology, the power of love and forgiveness, can change everything for everyone!
    - And the phrase "To enjoy my friend, I must respect him!" which I repeat every time my boys quarrel with their friends.
