During his summer vacation in 1842, Mendelssohn composed four miniatures for piano in each of the albums of two children associated with him. Years later, he revised the pieces. In the process, he excluded two of them, arranged the remaining ones in a new order, and published them under the title "Children's Pieces." Mendelssohn died shortly before the publication of the edition in 1848. Although published posthumously, Mendelssohn himself initiated the first edition, which is why it is the primary source for our edition. The two pieces not included in his work 72 are included in the appendix.
