September, 1916. The Bulgarian commander of Serres orders the residents of Jumayya to leave their homes within two hours.
The order finds Annou, daughter of the Vlach trader Sandros Raskou, already uprooted twice. The first time from Jumayya, where she secretly left with the Turk Furkan, and the second time from Kavakli in Eastern Thrace, where she and Furkan had set up their home. Annou, with her family, follows the long caravan of the uprooted in the forced death march, not knowing how many more lives fate has in store for her to live.
A string of uprooted lives stretched along the long road we took. For where no one knew. […] At first, a soft lament from women rose, then the muffled murmur and the clattering from so many wheels on the stones and the shuffling of so many feet drowned out every other noise. Words were absent...
Two years later, with the surrender of the Bulgarians, Sandros Raskou's family is free to return to their ancestral lands. However, Jumayya no longer exists; the stone houses have become embankments in the firing range of the English and Bulgarians. How many more losses is it written that Annou will live on this uncertain path back to her homeland?
