Read an excerpt
Covering a time span of approximately 18,000 years, this section of the book focuses on certain works that have been milestones or turning points in the history of art.
The approaches and intentions of artists who have marked the evolution of art from prehistory to the present with their works are reflected in artworks of all kinds and various themes: portraits, landscapes, allegories, mythological or religious compositions, sculptures, engravings. The selection of works presented and discussed here has been made based not only on their artistic value but also on their status as turning points in the course of art's development. Some of these works were even ridiculed or rejected when they first appeared because they challenged the accepted artistic perceptions and choices of the time.
Also, some of the works presented may be considered "classics" today, but when they were created, they represented a break or turning point with the artistic values and methods of their era. Finally, each work presented here is examined and commented on, obviously, in relation to its artistic as well as broader cultural contexts.
