Description

The questions related to the tomb of Alexander the Great concern its location, type, and the time it was destroyed or fell into oblivion. By comparing relevant texts from certain ancient authors (Strabo, Caesar, Zenobius, Achilleus Tatius, as well as excerpts from Polybius, which have not been utilized), we conclude that the tomb was more likely to have been located near the point where the two main streets of Alexandria converged, the later Tetrapylon, and not near the sea or the mosques of Nabi Daniel and Attarin, nor in the so-called Alabaster tomb in the Latin cemetery. It was an underground tomb and not a mausoleum like Cleopatra's. The tomb was not destroyed during the period from the 3rd to the 5th century AD by wars, natural disasters, or Christians, who indeed considered the worship of Alexander a competitor. On the contrary, Christians, as the 'builders' of the city and a respected figure for all, transformed Alexander into a monotheist, following the Jews and being followed by Islam, where he is considered a prophet. Thus, taking into account Christian, Islamic, and more recent sources, we believe that the location of the tomb, built by Ptolemy near the Tetrapylon, was known up to the 10th and likely up to the 15th century, after which it was forgotten, with tradition placing it from then on at the mosques of Nabi Daniel and Attarin.
