Description & Specifications

This study highlights the importance of cultural parameters for understanding developments in institutions and politics from the fall of the dictatorship until today. It answers questions about the values and ideas that drive us, how these have shaped political decisions, collective and individual behaviors, and how they have been influenced by global and European developments. The fundamental question, therefore, is why we do what we do.

The catalyst was the Greek crisis that had been brewing for some time but erupted in 2009-2010 and lasted an entire decade (2009-2019). The subsequent external shocks (2020-2022) found an economy and society in turmoil.

The main argument of this work is that during the Metapolitefsi, a cultural pluralism prevailed in Greek politics and society – a mix of partly opposing values and ideas from tradition, modernity, and postmodernity. Often, individuals themselves were driven by multiple and partially incompatible values.

Inevitably, various value dilemmas and compromises (hybrid solutions) emerged. Each area of politics, of course, exhibits peculiarities. For example, in public administration, collegial solidarity clashes with accountability, and seniority conflicts with evaluation. In spatial planning, the preservation of architectural heritage and the protection of the natural environment confront the prevailing notions of ownership. In social policy, the general organization of solidarity through the welfare state faces privileged arrangements.

This work examines the theoretical approaches to culture that have been proposed over time (social capital theory, modernization theory, etc.), clarifies the authors' assumptions about the country's cultural landscape, and analyzes value contrasts in selected areas of politics. In this context, it also addresses issues that have been widely discussed over time – what the position of cultural dualism gives us, whether the country has a hegemonic core, to what extent it modernized, whether and how the European archetype influenced our culture, and what compositions of values and ideas coordinated political forces attempted.
