Veria is not as well-known as it should be for the rich heritage of notable Byzantine and post-Byzantine religious monuments that are preserved in the historic core of the town.
One of the most important Byzantine churches in Veria is that of Saints Kyriakos and Julitta. It is a complex four-aisled church with particularly interesting ceramic decoration and a ceramic inscription on the eastern arch of the semi-hexagonal sanctuary that bears the name of its founder, "Bishop Makarios."
Byzantinists have studied the church and have proposed various dates for its foundation. This study attempts to identify the bishop mentioned in the ceramic inscription and to represent the valuable architectural monument.
