The Asia Minor Catastrophe has been characterized, perhaps not without reason, as the greatest national defeat for Hellenism. Kathimerini took it upon itself to express its own "truth," to indicate the appropriate policy, and primarily, to denounce within the framework of a relentless war the actions and omissions of the opponent. The sharpness of its judgments was absolutely intertwined with the sharpness of the political confrontations of the time.

Victim and perpetrator of an endlessly reproduced and self-sustaining fanaticism, it found itself at the center of the civil conflict with its articles. And from its first year of circulation, its political momentum was given and necessary, as it wanted to be taken seriously by friends and opponents. Its role in shaping the political line of the party it supported was given and pivotal.

Often, its partisan orientation and adherence to political figures did not allow it to confront and interpret events with calmness. But this calmness was missing from the entirety of the press, as journalistic pens had been forged in the anvil of party loyalty.

Even so –or perhaps for this reason– it constitutes one of the best historical sources, illuminating in its own way one side of the great historical events. And thus it is worth studying, of course away from the easy and overly simplistic labels of "traitors," "patriots," and other loud analogies.
