The progressive technological change characterizing the 4th industrial revolution has created peculiar and often new issues in the world of work. The new disruptive technologies, which not only evolve existing ones but differentiate them in unexpected ways through hyperconnectivity and interoperability, have caused radical changes in industrial relations and a paradigm shift in their legal regulation.

In light of these unprecedented developments, the question arises whether the rules and institutions of labor law that are currently applicable—at national, international, and supranational levels—are capable of addressing the rapidly evolving changes in the world of work resulting from the digital organization of businesses, or if new rules need to be adopted, and if so, in what direction. These are precisely the questions that the authors aim to answer in this volume titled “Digitization in Labor: Challenges and Prospects,” published as part of the Jean Monnet Project “Processes for the Constitutional Identity of the European Union: the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights/Rights of the EU” and implemented by the Center for International and European Economic Law (CIEEL) between 2020-2023.
