When the Earth was formed, huge amounts of lava and gases (from volcanoes) created its first atmosphere, which produced the first rains and the first storms. Lightning and the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation helped create complex chemical compounds in the oceans that had already formed. 3.8 billion years ago, the first cell capable of replicating itself was born. For two billion years, primitive bacteria learned to use sunlight and carbon dioxide, and thus a protective ozone layer soon formed, allowing the creation of increasingly advanced forms of life.
