Description

Crime and corruption, secrets and lies, intrigues and passions… 12 true stories through the captivating narrative of one of the leading REPRESENTATIVES of investigative journalism.

With insightful observations, revealing interviews, and after thorough research, Patrick Radden Keefe presents twelve stories of crime and punishment. The award-winning journalist examines, among other things, whether the informant who dared to expose money laundering at a Swiss bank was a hero or a storyteller.

He talks about the years-long struggle to capture an international arms dealer, sketches the past of a mass murderer, and profiles a passionate lawyer who defends the lives of notorious killers. He unveils how one of Africa's greatest treasures came under the control of a fabulously wealthy Israeli, in a book that will hold your interest until the last page.

We sat in Koch's "cowboy room," surrounded by paintings by Charles Marion Russell, bronze sculptures of riders by Frederick Remington, and antiques such as cowboy hats, hunting knives, and dozens of weapons displayed in glass cases: Jesse James's gun, the gun of Jesse James's killer, Sitting Bull's pistol, General Custer's carbine. Koch, 67 years old, is tall and slender, with bushy white hair, round glasses, and a childlike, piercing laugh. He contracted hepatitis at MIT – where he studied undergraduate and earned a PhD in chemical engineering – and because of this, he could no longer tolerate hard liquor. However, he could still drink wine. He began ordering the most expensive wines from restaurant menus and thus discovered some that he liked.
