In the face of the impending power vacuum, the two major parties, the state machinery, and public services abandon the city, devising police plans to uncover the instigator.

However, a surprise awaits those in power: the population of the city awakens, becomes "illuminated," and rediscovers the values of solidarity, personal responsibility, and mutual aid. Yet, the state has not yet said its last word.

Is it a pessimistic book? "I am not pessimistic. The world is dreadful," claims José Saramago, who with this new novel, which is the opposite of his novel "Blindness," has once again achieved great success worldwide.
